Falcons defense is giving Dieter Brock and the Rams all they can handle. Turnovers by the defense has jump started ATL a big 1st half lead. Eric Dickerson was a none factor in the 1st half which was surprising to me.

Not that it matters, this game is almost 50 years old. However, the refs threw the flag way BEFORE Payton broke the run and scored. The refs had no idea how the play would turn out, and it was blown dead anyway. Jeepers!!

Saints are classy in those uniforms. Had they not been foiled twice, at the close of their games with Atlanta, it would have been New Orleans with the 9-7 record. They played a tough schedule, on top of it, with the Steelers" Eagles and Cowboys as opponents. That defense looked tough, especially against the run. Falcons defense still playing a maniacal blitzing style and you rarely see less than two of them in on a tackle. They rushed Manning's timing, resulting in some poor throws and on fourth and a foot, Galbreath barely gets the first down by half the football, late in the first half. Their savvy playing style did not win fans over in visiting cities. They were booed in Pittsburgh that year (1978) and booed by Cowboy fans during the playoffs when Roger Staubach was knocked unconscious.

I'm a big fan of the late Bill Mazer. He is featured prominently in this broadcast with his sideline reporting. He is also featured in CBS Control at the tail end of the 1970 St. Louis Cardinals at Detroit Lions CBS broadcast on another youtube item. Does anyone know if there are any other RUclips snippets with Bill Mazer featured? Because I love listening to his insights. I was 8 years old and just being accustomed to watching the NFL in 1970 and so anytime I see Bill is a reminder of my childhood days when I was in awe of the NFL and its players. Thank you.

This is IMHO the most underrated bad-weather game in NFL history. It should’ve been dubbed The Slush Bowl - without a nickname, it didn’t develop a mythology like the Mud Bowl the next week in LA. I watched this game because growing up in Central New York in the ‘70s, we were forced to watch the Giants invent new ways to lose football games each week. Walter Payton had become my all-time favorite player that season, so I was rooting hard for the Bears. The condition of that field really was inexcusable, but I can overlook it because the Bears somehow won the game, and the reality of the situation is that the wretched state of the field added more than its share of entertainment value. JeffvPearlmam’s biography of Payton had some hilarious anecdotes attributed to various Bears players. According to the book, before Bob Thomas and the fire-drill winning FG, Don Rives supposedly told him that if he didn’t make the kick, he’d make sure he’d never have children. LOL The grounds crew at Giants Stadium must have gone on an early Christmas vacation, because there’s no excuse for so much slush being on that field. The sleet was steady, but it wasn’t all that thick, so they obviously didn’t cover the field before the game. One last thing: Alex Hawkins really was a complete moron. How he kept his announcing job as long as he did is a mystery, or else he had photos of the president of CBS Sports pumping his own gas in front of working girls a la Jimmy Swaggart that he threatened to release to the Enquirer if they dared fire him.

I was 14 years old not quite 15 yet when I watch this game in 1976 and I was a huge COWBOYS fans and I thought to me the key play before the half was 3rd down and Pittsburgh had the ball around the 5 yard line, deep in their territory and Bradshaw made a deep pass to Lynn Swann who made a miraculous catch for the 1st down, I thought if the COWBOYS would held them on that play the STEELERS would have been force to punt out of their end zone and the COWBOYS would have had great field position with a chance to at get at least a field goal before the half. I'm not saying that's the reason why the COWBOYS lost because the STEELERS were just the better team but you just never how the outcome of the game would have been if the Cowboys would have held them deep in their territory but of course the STEELERS didn't score either before the half when they drove the ball deep in the COWBOYS territory and Roy Gerela missed the field goal.
